10 DEC: Launching and Growing a Business Successfully is an experience-sharing forum for start-ups and MSE (Micro, Small and Entrepreneur-led) businesses. The Series mainly helps entrepreneurs get access to business strategies, answer tax issues, legal advice, get incorporated, register trademarks, obtain visas, and more.

 

Part 4: Money on the Table: The Evolution of Fundraising

Speakers from the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks (HKSTP) and Cyberport will give us an overview about what their organisations do, how they support the local economy, speed up the growth of entrepreneurs and help expand the business of SMEs and technology start-ups. 

The overview will be followed by a discussion panel on fundraising at different stages of the business.

Peter Luk
HKSTP
Associate Director, Business Development Mainland & International in the Commercial Division
Mr. Peter Luk is the Associate Director, Business Development at the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) and he leads the Mainland & International in the Commercial Division. Peter will share with the audience the latest initiatives and developments in HKSTP with a focus on the funding opportunities. Overall, HKSTP is able to provide financial and operational support and excellent technical infrastructures to support innovation and business.

Alice So

Head of Entrepreneurship
Ms. Alice So has been dedicated to provide supports to Hong Kong start-ups for a decade. She worked for Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation before joining Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited in 2011. Currently Alice is the lead of Cyberport Entrepreneur Team offering the Cyberport Creative Micro Fund and the Cyberport Incubation Programme with funding support and professional services, plus the Cyberport Startup Alumni Association to nurture talents and assist start-ups at different stages to accelerate in the digital tech industry.

Ryanne Lai

Co-founder & Head of Lawyer Relations, Head of Partnerships
Ms. Ryanne Lai is a co-founder and the Head of Lawyer Relations of Zegal (Head of Partnerships). Zegal is based in Hong Kong at the Cyberport and its original start-up was selected as one of the Cyberport incubatee companies in 2014. Ryanne will share the story of how Zegal was founded and raised funding. Most importantly, the audience will get to know Zegal grows from an incubator in Cyberport to the fastest growing Legal Tech company operating across Asia Pacific and Europe.

Mr. Steven Fung is a Partner of the International Patent and Trademark Attorney Firm, Marks & Clerk. He predominately works with Engineers, Scientists and Industrialists in protecting their innovations and technology developments. Steven has been working with various regional and local start-ups and SMEs, assisting them with the Patent Application Grant application as well as other local and regional funding opportunities.

Mr. Pádraig Walsh is a Partner at Hong Kong law firm Tanner De Witt where he broadly focuses on clients within the technology sector (including fintech, insurtech, regtech, medtech, edutech, and cleantech). His work encompasses advice on PE and debt financings, leading on investment negotiations and completion, and preparing documents to implement deal terms. Pádraig also advises on the range of common issues for emerging companies such as corporate structuring, IP licensing, equity incentive plans, and shareholder disputes, representing both investors, strategics, and founders. Pádraig’s practice also includes assisting clients on licensing, regulatory and compliance which has enabled him to advise clients on a number of innovative, complex fintech projects. He is at the forefront of advising on legal issues for emerging businesses using blockchain technology.
